What is the
difference between Hot Tub, Spa, Jacuzzi or Whirlpool?
Anybody with any recollection
of an old Wild West movie, Spaghetti Western or indeed series such as
Bonanza will recall the dusty old cowboy enjoying a 'hot tub'. This would
have been a big oak barrel and 'Stinking Pete' relaxing in the steaming
hot water. If he paid extra, a saloon girl would assist his bathing and
more often than not he kept his hat on!

The
California 'Gold Rush' was around 1849, it is difficult to imagine
the heat, filth and stench that those hundreds of thousands of pioneers
experienced and how the hot tub would have been so necessary.
By 1900 the seven Italian Jacuzzi brothers (the J is silent and it
is pronounced Yah-koot-zee) immigrated to the USA and settled in California,
the heart of the Gold Rush.
If you tracked the pedigree of the Jacuzzi brothers businesses, you
would see that they evolved throughout economical changes and market
demands. It was 100 years after the California gold rush that Candido
developed a submersible bathtub pump for his son who had contracted
rheumatoid arthritis. Soon the Jacuzzi system was being marketed for
hydrotherapy, a soothing whirlpool treatment in the tub at home.

It wasn't until the
1960's that the Jacuzzi Hot Tub or Spa had evolved from the hydrotherapy
bath to the luxurious spa that we know today.
Celebrities endorsed this new status symbol and soon hundreds of thousands
of portable Jacuzzi portable units were installed, both indoors and outdoors,
at leisure centres, health resorts and and private homes.
Despite this success, the whirlpool bath was a sideline at Jacuzzi the
main revenue derived from sales of water pumps, marine jets, and swimming
pool equipment.
